How to Get SNAP Food Benefits in South Carolina
What Is SNAP?
SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) — formerly known as food stamps — is a federal benefit that puts money on an EBT card every month to buy groceries. In South Carolina, SNAP is administered by the Department of Social Services (DSS).
As of 2024, the average SC SNAP benefit is around $185/month per person. A family of four can receive up to roughly $975/month.
Do You Qualify?
Most households with a gross monthly income at or below 130% of the federal poverty level qualify. As of 2025, that's approximately:
- 1 person: $1,580/month gross ($18,954/year)
- 2 people: $2,137/month gross ($25,636/year)
- 3 people: $2,694/month gross ($32,318/year)
- 4 people: $3,250/month gross ($39,000/year)
Many other deductions (rent, childcare, medical expenses for elderly/disabled) can lower your countable income — even if your gross income is slightly over the limit, it's worth applying.
What Documents to Bring
Gather as many of these as you can before applying. You don't need to have all of them — a DSS worker can help you figure out what's required for your situation.
- Identity: Photo ID, driver's license, state ID card, or passport
- Residency: Utility bill, lease agreement, or any mail with your current address
- Income: Recent pay stubs, employer letter, unemployment letters, or proof of no income
- Social Security numbers for all household members applying
- Rent/mortgage amount (utility bills or landlord statement helpful)
- Citizenship/immigration status documents if applicable (lawfully present immigrants may qualify)
