How to Get SNAP Food Benefits in South Carolina

For Spartanburg County residents  ·  Updated May 2026  ·  5 min read

Need food right now? SNAP takes a few weeks to process. While you wait, visit a local food pantry — no application needed. See our Food resources for pantries open this week in Spartanburg County.

What Is SNAP?

SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) — formerly known as food stamps — is a federal benefit that puts money on an EBT card every month to buy groceries. In South Carolina, SNAP is administered by the Department of Social Services (DSS).

As of 2024, the average SC SNAP benefit is around $185/month per person. A family of four can receive up to roughly $975/month.

Do You Qualify?

Most households with a gross monthly income at or below 130% of the federal poverty level qualify. As of 2025, that's approximately:

Many other deductions (rent, childcare, medical expenses for elderly/disabled) can lower your countable income — even if your gross income is slightly over the limit, it's worth applying.

Special situations: Households with a senior (60+) or disabled member only need to meet a net income test (100% FPL), which is lower than the gross test. If everyone in your household receives SSI, Medicaid, or TANF, you likely qualify automatically — call DSS to confirm.

What Documents to Bring

Gather as many of these as you can before applying. You don't need to have all of them — a DSS worker can help you figure out what's required for your situation.

Note: Undocumented immigrants do not qualify for SNAP. However, mixed-status families can still apply — only the qualifying members need to be listed, and immigration status of non-applying household members is not reported to immigration authorities.
