What to Expect at Your First Meeting
- You don't have to speak. You can attend and just listen. Many people do this for their first several meetings.
- You don't have to give your full name. First names only are the norm.
- You don't need to be sober to walk in. Meetings welcome people wherever they are in their journey.
- It's free. A small donation basket is sometimes passed, but it is never required.
- Meetings vary. Some are speaker meetings, some are discussion meetings, some are step studies. If one doesn't feel right, try another โ the format and group culture differ.
- Open vs. Closed meetings: Open meetings welcome anyone (including family and supporters). Closed meetings are for people who identify as having a problem with alcohol (AA) or drugs (NA).
